Google Places and why you need it
There has been so much talk lately on all of the popular real estate, technology, small business and entrepreneur blogs about Google Places and how Google Places is impacting the search results for search terms like "Realtor" or as in the example below "pizza".
A search term like "pizza" is considered to be very broad, which in the past would have given you a very broad search result with a list of pizza parlors for anywhere in the country. That's isn't helpful to anyone looking for local take out! When someone searches the term "Realtor", they are likely looking for a Realtor in a specific area, someone local, not just some random Realtor.
According to SEOmoz in a recent study on search engine result pages:
"The results show that users heavily gravitate toward any of Places’ listings, whether they’re mixed into organic lists, concentrated in a group of seven or even listed in the middle of the results page. The heat map above shows the activity around a Google search for 'pizza.' " See the original article on Mashable here
With your business listed in Google Places, you are much more likely to be found on a local search than that of a company located across the country or a neighboring city/county. Google is very smart and it knows where people are located when they search, it only makes sense to serve up local businesses for broad searches like "Realtor" or "Pizza". Google is only as valuable to it's users as it's search results. The easier it is for Google to figure out what your website or blog is about, who it serves and who should be visiting, the easier it is to send "Googlers" your way.
If you haven't registered your business listing in Google Places, there is no better time than the present to do so and it's pretty darned easy. Don't wait another minute, the listing can be edited and nothing is set in concrete.

You will need a Google account to register with Google Places…if you don't have one, you will have the option to create an account when you register. Need more reasons to get that post started…this is a screen shot from Google Places.
See where it says "Get found on Google for free"?
I rest my case.
