Interesting article in the Wall Street Journal

I came across an article this morning when I launched my Internet Browser (Firefox) on the home page of Yahoo! that really caught my eye.  In my past life I had the pleasure of being a professional sales trainer to many hi-tech companies in the San Francisco Bay Area.  As a sales training consultant, I was hired for my expertise in selling skills and helping the sales professionals to break old habits and replace them with new habits that really work.  The number one rule in selling is to STOP TALKING ABOUT YOURSELF!  You know the old rule…"you have two ears and one mouth, use them accordingly".  So many of my clients had sales people that did what I used to call the "product puke"…and honestly, who wants to hear that?

As I read this article, which was about the top one hundred used words in the English language, there was no suprise that the number one word used in the English conversation is the word "I".

Top 100 words from Wall Street journal

The reason I bring this up in our blog is because you absolutely MUST get the "I" out of your marketing messages, your sales pitch or anything else that has to do with promoting your business.  Your marketing messages, business cards, website, postcards, and anything else you can think of should have messages that answer the question "what is in it for them?"  Not what is in it for you, which would include the word "I".

As you think about your next marketing piece and what you want to put on that marketing piece, include statements that tell the customer what is in it for them, it will get you much better results with your messages.
